FANGIO’S GREATEST RACE
1957 German Grand Prix Nurburgring
This year the German Grand Prix was essentially between three drivers and two marquees, Mike Hawthorn his team mate Pete Collins both driving for Lancia-Ferrari and Juan M Fangio driving a 250F Maserati.
The Nurburgring lap was 14 miles, the race over 22 laps. Fangio knew the Ferrari,s intended to race through without a pit stop, he decided to start with his fuel tank half full and soft tyres,the intention being to gain sufficient lead over the Ferrari’s to put him in a position to retake them after his pit stop.
Hawthorn and Collins led from Fangio leaving the rest of the field behind, on lap 3 Fangio went into the lead and proceeded to pull away from them gaining a 30 second lead before his pitstop on lap12 for fuel and tyres. The pitstop did not go well. After changing the wheels, one hub cap was missing, there was a delay until it was found under the car. Fangio returned the track 50 seconds behind second place man Collins. Now started the race of Fangoi’s life. He broke the lap record on every flying lap until lap 20, reducing it from 9 min 41.6 sec. to 9 min 17.4 sec passing Collins then Hawthorn on the penultimate lap to take the chequered flag. The race lasting 3 hours 38 minutes. That was real Grand Prix Racing.
